Garner, North Carolina is quickly becoming one of the most promising locations in the Triangle for homebuyers. Last year the National Civic League recognized it as a 2013 All-America City, and 2014 promises to bring in even more accolades.
Garner’s town council gave the go-ahead last month for $1 million in park enhancements to be paid for with bonds. Enhancements include:
- Replacement restrooms and concession areas at Garner Recreation Park and South Garner Park
- Dugout covers for all town baseball and softball fields (5 total)
- A new mobile stage
- 2 dog parks
- $92,500 for various improvements, including fencing for soccer fields at South Garner Park
Garner was also honored as a 2014 Playful City USA by the KaBOOM! Playful City USA program. The award is given to towns across America that ensure all children have easy access to balanced and active play in their communities. “We are proud of our programs, facilities, and special events, as well as the level of dedication each staff person – including those in Public Works and the Police Department – exhibits while working to successfully maintain the aesthetics and safety of our parks,” said Sonya Shaw, Garner Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Director.
Seniors also have a place to shine in Garner as the State of North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services certified the Garner Senior Center in May as a Center of Excellence. The certification is a result of a 5-year process that involves demonstrating achievement in 5 areas:
- Outreach and access to services
- Programs and activities
- Planning, evaluation, and input from older adults
The designation means the center will remain eligible for three shares of funding from the state to enhance services.
Garner had an estimated median household income of $59,797 in 2012 and an estimated median housing value of $166,109– both of which are above the statewide medians.
