Durham Bulls Athletic Park completed a massive renovation project during this offseason that will improve both the fan and player experiences. This will be the 20th season of operation for DBAP, and its $20 million makeover will be on display for Opening Weekend.
Video Displays & Sound System
Three state-of-the-art video displays featuring instant replays, in-game entertainment, and game information have been installed. The largest display, at 28-by-62 feet, covers three times the area of the previous screen and forced the relocation of the original manually-operated scoreboard to the center field.
Just in case you missed the replay on the video board, visitors can watch replays using the Bulls’ app during the game. “We’ll have one of the most robust WiFis in minor league baseball,” says General manager Mike Birling.
In addition, a new LED display will run the length of the outfield wall and above the new Club level for a total of 3,838,464 LED’s installed, accompanied by over 100 new high-grade speakers.
Concessions & Picnic Areas
A major goal of the project was to reduce wait times for concessions with at least twenty new points of sale throughout the park. A new 10,000-square-foot area behind first base, called Jackie’s Landing, will also have food kiosks and bars to give fans an uninterrupted view of the game. The menus have been upgraded to include a larger selection of options as well.
New Front Porch Boxes have been installed in the outfield to allow private groups to look across the field in open-air patio boxes. They are also excellent seats for catching home run balls! Extra canopy-covered areas for group events have been added to the third base picnic area as well. For more information on group seating, click here.
PNC Triangle Club
Deemed the “Crown Jewel of the Renovations” by Bulls management, the PNC Triangle Club is located directly behind home plate and provides a full glass view of the field, a private bar, and easy outdoor access into the stands. Members have their choice of lounge style padded seating outside the Club or seats behind home plate close to the action.
The Club will provide a unique dining experience that changes nightly and includes a carving station, salad and main course selection, dessert bar, unlimited Pepsi products, and premium drink vouchers. It is also available for rent outside of game time for parties, conferences, and receptions.
The Bulls will be playing on a brand new surface this spring. State-of-the-art drainage, irrigation, gravel, and sand sub-layers were installed under the Tifway 419 Bermuda Grass. The DBAP’s new infield will be a DuraEdge Pro Infield – the same makeup at Major League Parks.
Seating & Hangouts
All of the seats have been removed and replaced with new model 507s by American Seating. These new seats have higher backing and longer seat planes.
There are also places for fans to congregate around the seating bowl as the pillars and gates around the entrance have been removed. “I call them hangout areas,” Birling says. “You can still see the game, but you can gather with family, friends, or co-workers to watch. That’s why people come out to the ballpark, to enjoy themselves and have a good time. That’s what we’re trying to create here.”
