Clayton to Develop 2,500-Lot Residential Community

Earp Property with Large Pond

Clayton, NC is becoming more impressive every day! We recently shared all the great improvements and expansions the town proposed for its 2014-2015 budget, and now Wakefield Development Co. has submitted a preliminary master plan for a 2,500-lot residential community named Steeplechase.

The master plan includes:

  • Single-family homes
  • Town homes
  • Apartments
  • Condominiums
  • Clubhouse
  • Large pond
  • Commercial center at intersection of Covered Bridge Rd and O’Neil Street
  • Space for a school

Neighbors of the proposed community met at The Clayton Center in October to hear from the developers. Traffic was a common concern. “I can’t hardly get out of my drive right now,” said Mavis House, who lives on Covered Bridge Road. “I don’t know what it will do to traffic, but they are going to have to have more stoplights.”

The town of Clayton is requiring a traffic study and has informed the developer of needed improvements including the widening and realignment of Covered Bridge Road and changes at intersections. The master plan must win approval from Clayton leaders before development may begin. “Twenty-five hundred units will not magically appear all at one time,” said Dave DeYoung, Clayton’s planning director. “This will be phased in over time, and that will obviously be taken into consideration in the traffic study.”

Wakefield Development Co. previously developed Raleigh’s Wakefield Plantation and Bedford at Falls River communities. “What it means for Clayton is that it will be the shining star for us,” said Mayor Jody McLeod. “I don’t know how fortunate Clayton could be to have that happen for us.”
